Unexpected Power Outage in Your Freezer

Has the power gone out at your house? Did you notice if your refrigerator broke last night? Do you have qualms about food that was in the freezer?

If this happens, don’t worry because there are easy to follow instructions for food safety.

If the food has been completely thawed or even warmed to room temperature, throw it away. Discard it if it has been out of the refrigerator for over two hours.

Make sure to cook the food right away if it’s almost thawed and still a little cold. The cooked foods can either be consumed or put in the refrigerator to eat later.

The food can be refrozen if there are still ice crystals visible on it. If you do not have a freezer available, throw it in a cooler and add dry ice. These items will need to be cooked, because your freezer will not offer the same longevity that a normal freezer would offer.

Once food starts to show off the markings of freezer burn they need to be thrown out immediately.

Storms and accidents will always cause power outages; however, you can use preparation to be ready for whatever happens.
If your existing fridge or freezer has seen better days, the best advice that anyone can give you is you invest in a new one. Definitely consider a large refrigerator/freezer as used in America is if there is space for it. Any kitchen will be much better by having this. A broad selection of American refrigerators and freezers is available for viewing at this site.

How to Choose the Right Wood for Your Deck - Environmental Factors

Gepost door admin op 28/05/2008

There are two main environmental factors to consider when choosing a lumber species for your deck.

Firstly if you are seeking a softwood species, it will generally require treatment with a chemical preservative to provide the durability required for a long a service life. From time to time concerns have been expressed about the potentially harmful nature of the products used, mainly the potential danger of the chemicals leaching out from the wood. Admittedly this is grey area with conflicting “evidence” being presented to back up claims one way or the other. One of the most common chemical preservatives used in the past has been CCA (copper-chrome-arsenic) and although such products have been used for decades, some countries or regions have now taken steps to ban the use of CCA, at least in public spaces.

In recent years a number of alternative wood preservation products have come on the market which are claimed to have little or no potential harmful consequences. However whether these products will provide the same long term protection of the timber as CCA, remains to be proven.

But the main environmental factor to be considered to is that of the destruction of forests and ensuring the any wood is sourced from forests which are managed responsibly on long term sustainable basis without affecting the surrounding environment and complying with all legal requirements of the country of origin. For all too long, tropical (and other) forests have been decimated to make quick, short term profits with devastating long term consequences. Uncontrolled or illegal logging of forests in the Amazon basin and in Sth East Asia have been of particular concern. Gradually however this situation is changing, although illegal logging is still rampant in many third world countries in particular.

In an attempt to ensure the responsible harvesting and sustainable forestry practices yet assure the ongoing viability of existing forest industries, various international organizations have been set up, the best known of which is probably the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This non profit organization aims to ensure responsible and sustainable management of forests and issues certificates of compliance for lumber or wood products that are harvested or produced from such forests. End products can also be certified by the FSC providing the entire chain from lumber harvesting through processing and production of finished products complies with the regulations and requirements of the FSC.

In recent years an increasing number of countries have set up their own standards and certification procedures. However in many cases the standards and procedures are nowhere near as strict as those of the FSC and to a large extent seem designed to give some quasi government backed assurance that wood is being harvested responsibly and sustainably. For list of forests and companies that are currently certified by the FSC see the web site http://www.fsc.org . Alternatively further information can be obtained from the organization SmartWood http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/ which is an independent non profit forestry certifier accredited by the FSC.

Home Improvement and Equity

At what time you allow faith to take over and leave problems
behind rather than repairing the problem you are only dropping
the value of your home since the equity will decrease. The
equity of the home determines your faith. If you apply for a
mortgage against the home, you may not get the value if the
equity drops. Likewise, if you decide to sell your home you must
suffer loss. Now you can ask your self-questions, are you
worried about your home’s equity value? Are you lingering
waiting for problems around the house to fix them self?

When you leave leaky faucets unattended, or else allow crud to
build in the bathrooms, or even allow holes to linger in the
walls you are only causing more harm to you and your home. The
act on your part will lead to substantial decrease in loans
against the home, and substantial decrease in sell of the home.
The lingering may also lead to higher cost for repairs later.

If you fix the problem now it could save you hundreds later.
Fixing leaky faucets, merely details tightening a screw or nut,
or else paying around ten bucks to replace the thing…you
merely loosen the nuts at the top of the old faucet and slid in
the new faucet to fix the problem.

For the most part, you will need to locate the water shutoff
valve before installing a new faucet. This is probably the
hardest part of installing a new faucet.

If you allow crud to build in your bath area, or kitchen area,
it only brings down the appearance of the home, and brings down
the opinion of friends and family on you.

>From time to time, you can clean the crud from the area to
improve the appeal of the home, but other times you must
entirely improve the area.

For the bath area if the crud is not cleanable, then you may
need to replace certain areas of the bath. If you have tile
walls you can replace cracked tiles easy. On the other hand, if
you need an entire shower replacement you will need a kit.

A new shower kit will only cost you a few hundred dollars, but
will increase the value of your home immensely. If you must
install a new shower, you will need tools. The kit generally has
the materials you need for installation. The tools required
include a 3/8 PVC Pipe, Purple Primer, CPVC Cement, Philips
Screwdriver, Silicon Sealant, Liquid Nails, Tubing Cutter, and a
bit of common sense.

The first step to improving your home by installing a new shower
is to gather all the materials and tools together and put them
in reach. You will need to even the floor with the drainpipe and
make sure all the water connection is turned off before starting
the installation. Once you finish you will need to check the
area for leaks before completing the final phase of
installation.

The kit will include new faucet, showerhead, walls, shower doors
and/or curtains. The curtain kits are often cheaper than the
kits that include shower doors.

The walls will come in handy; especially if the old walls are so
far gone, that repairing or cleaning is out of the question. If
you clean the shower area daily, you can prevent going through
this installation process again in the near future.

It only takes a couple of dollars to repair, but it can take
thousands to fix lingering problems. Again, the equity of your
home is the primary focus for any lender or buyer, thus keeping
the equity value stable is important to you and your home.

If you feel that you do not have the skills to improve your
home, or else the cash to repair or improve, you may want to
consider reading a variety of materials on home improvement,
especially the do-it-your-self books that can guide you through
the steps to improving or repairing your home at an affordable
cost. Some books will guide you through the process while
informing you of cheaper strategies than others will.

Is Paneling Walls good for Home Improvement?

Gepost door admin op 13/05/2008
Toegevoegd onder: The Zen Of Home Improvement

How do you quickly improve your home at minimal costs? What is a quick and cheap way for home improvement? Try paneling. Paneling is one of the cheaper methods for improving homes. Paneling might not be dependable as some materials for home improvement, but for the most part, you could use the panel to hide faulty areas of the home. Paneling is durable, easy to clean and comes in wide range of styles, colors, textures and prices. It is forever best to have the correct tools and materials, as well as the designs selected before starting a home improvement course.

Therefore, considering panel may need reconsidering especially if you do not know your options. Dry walling can be time consuming and stirs up a messy atmosphere, while tiling walls is less dramatic. Wallpaper is more of a headache than anything else is, but if you purchase the self-adhesive paper, it is less problematic.

Panel is cheap; however, whether it stands through all types of weather depends on the type of paneling purchased and how the paneling is installed. A number of home improvement tasks which includes removing stains, mildew, peeling paint, caulk, as well as other filtering clutters might have to be completed before repairing the home with the panel.

If your walls are lumpy or else dents are in the area you will need scrapers, plaster, knife, spackle, cloth, sandpaper, and paint to fix the problem, especially if you are repairing or remodeling drywall, tiles, or vinyl walls. Almost immediately, when you have the correct tools and materials, you can begin the modus operandi to fix the dents, cracks and holes, or else remove stains. You will especially need the patches that are included with plastering kits to fix large holes in the wall area. Thus, some of these tools and materials are needed when paneling the walls in the home for improvement.

Some people actually panel walls to cover holes, dents, and cracks. A person might even choose to panel the walls to cover peeling paint, or rusty paints. The concept is to get the job over with while saving money and ignoring the real problem behind the wall. If this works for you so be it, but you should consider…

Panel can bring down the equity of your home. Lenders factor in loans, and base the equity value of a home on its interior and exterior makeup. If a home is not built on stone, thus the lender will drop the amount of loan giving to the borrower. Therefore, you may want to reconsider paneling the walls, especially if your goal to home improvement is increasing the equity of your home.

Few rooms are better off without panel regardless of the intentions, while other rooms in a home are better off with paneling. Some people prefer the decorative paneling known as wainscoting for their dining or family room. This paneling type covers the lower 3 or 4 feet of an interior wall. The bath areas are appealing when paint, wood, and tile setoff the area. If you make a decision to wall covering your bath, then consider covering the walls with tile. Tile is used in many homes on floors and walls, thus the tiles are sturdy and will stand up through most storms.

If you already have paneled walls and want to renew the areas, since certain portions of the paneled wall is cracked, dented, of filled with holes, instead of going to the lengths of buying all new materials consider restoring your walls. Restoring paneling takes little effort, time, and costs less than paneling the entire wall. You may want to paint the panel to give it a new look.

You will need a putty knife, nail set, caulk gun, flat pry bar, framing square, rubber mallet, hammer, carpentry knife, a chisel and a wallboard knife for restoring the panel. You will also need replacement paneling, wood fillers, putty stick, finishing nails, panel adhesive, spray paint, nails, finishing nails, and shims to complete your mission. If you decide on replacement paneling, try to find a match by running a check on the manufacturer from when the paneling might have been procured. You may get lucky and find matching paneling.

It is always wise to have what you need when improving homes. Having all the right tools and materials can save you hassle. Again, paneling is one the cheaper ideas for home improving, however the panel is not sturdy like many other materials available today.

Thus, tiles tend to offer endurance over most materials with exceptions of vinyl. Therefore, when improving your home, consider all aspects, including cost, challenge, equity, etc. to determine what is right for you. Although paneling may be the easiest and cheapest thing to do for home improvement, it may be the costliest when it comes to your home equity. Remember, most materials and tools are affordable, thus picking the right choice is always right when improving homes.

Tips On Using a Pressure Washer

Gepost door admin op 26/04/2008

What can you do to get thick hard mud off of a vehicle or your home? When big storm hits or birds attack, I find that my home gets plastered with debris that is not so easy to remove with a bucket and sponge. Also, when my truck finds its way through a muddle road, there is often mud so thick and hard I can hardly break it off by hand. The one solution, though, that seems to have been the most effective is a pressure washer.

A pressure washer is basically a contraption that is hooked to a hose. Water is shot through the hose at very high pressure so that the water acts as its own abrasive. The force of the stream will knock off debris and other foreign substances that can often cause damage to the paint on your home or vehicle. Pressure washers are commonly used in a number of industries.

If you have a home made of brick or concrete and find it caked with hard to remove filth from a combination of dirt, bird droppings, and pollutants from the air, you may find that a pressure washer is the best way you can clean your outside walls. The high pressure water will help remove the dirt and grime, but since you are not using an abrasive cleanser, there is not the same concern over hurting the surface like their might be otherwise.

The above is why pressure washers are often used to clean the sides of buildings. You may see maintenance or some outside service arrive at your place of business in a truck or van equipped with the pressure washer. A hose is held by one or two people and the water is shot at the wall. The debris on there is knocked off by the high pressure water and it allows them to clean the wall. Pressure washers can only be used, obviously, on highly durable materials like concrete and steel.

Pressure washers can also be used to clean vehicles. Since the paint can sometime sbe at risk, the washer is often set at a lower pressure than when cleaning something like a brick wall that can withstand more abuse. Even at the lower pressure, the water is able to knock the mud and dirt from the vehicle. Pressure washers are often used on firetrucks, semis and even trains as a way to get rid of all the extra filth that can be accumulated at a fire, on the road, or across the country on the rails.

If you find that your vehicle, home, or place of business is covered with any sort of hard to remove filth, you may want to consider a pressure washer. A pressure washer can use something as simple as water to remove some of the toughest build ups you can imagine. At the same time, avoiding the use of harsh abrasives or chemicals to remove the stains will protect your walls or paint. So consider a pressure washer as an alternative to the traditional bucket, sponge, and chemicals.

History of cuckoo clocks

Cuckoo clocks are unique creations that are centuries old. The
first cuckoo clock was produced back in the early 18th century
in Germany’s region known as the Black Forest. Clock making in
this area of Germany dates back to the early 17th century,
almost a full hundred years before clockmakers and craftsmen
produced the very first cuckoo clock. The father of cuckoo
clocks in believed to be the German clockmaker, Franz Anton
Ketterer, although there are a great many stories and lore
revolving around this unique timepiece.

This early clock was thought to be inspired by a Bohemian design
from the late early 1600s that came to Germany from a peddler
from the modern day Czech Republic. This method of selling
timepieces made the cuckoo clock even more famous, as clock
makers all around the Black Forest area of Germany. In the next
three centuries, peddlers would travel all around Europe selling
these charming timepieces, further influencing different areas
of Europe with the unique sound of the cuckoo clock.

Although the first cuckoo clocks were made of wood, they are a
great deal simpler in style than the intricately decorated and
heavily carved creations that are usually thought of to be
cuckoo clocks. Instead of just the case being made of wood,
early Germany clockmakers made every piece of the clock from
wood, including the gears and other working parts. This is one
of the reasons why these early clocks have fallen into disrepair
or are completely lost. Furthermore, many of these early clocks
were painted with watercolor paints, which do not have the
potential to hold their pigments over time and are easily
removed by simply cleaning the clock with a damp cloth.

Although these early clocks were more primitive than their
modern day counterparts, they included the famous cuckoo bird
instead of more traditional chimes to mark the hour. Native to
Asia, Africa, and Europe, the cuckoo bird is a unique bird that
lays their eggs in the nests of other birds, which in turn rear
the cuckoo’s young as surrogate parents. This bird was commonly
grey in color, although the female features a vibrant tuft of
red feathers atop her head.

Also like today’s clocks, the early cuckoo clocks were decorated
in schemes that showed families, military motifs, or hunting
scenes. In the late 1800s, the production of cuckoo clocks
became industrialized and began production for customers all
over Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world. Soon, the
cuckoo clock became immediately synonymous with Germany life and
style, making the timepiece an incredibly popular souvenir.
Three of the more famous clock makers in Germany began making
cuckoo clocks, namely Theodore Ketterer, Fidel Hepting, and
Johann Baptist Beha.

Unlike the industrialization in other parts of the world where
large, noisy, dirty factories took over the countryside, the
cuckoo clock factories were generally much smaller and housed in
cottages where entire families would contribute one specific
part of the clock. Each individual was trained in one aspect of
clock making or decorating, with one family member working on
the actual clock, another working on the case carving, another
on painting the decorations, and another to completely assemble
the piece. Over 13,500 men, women, and children worked in making
cuckoo clocks during this period of time in the Black Forest
village of Triberg.

Today, the cuckoo clock has made its way all over the world.
Still made in many of the same traditions, the most historic
cuckoo clocks are still produced in the Black Forest region.
Whether you choose to decorate your home with a clock that
houses the tiny bird or want a true German souvenir to remember
your trip, a cuckoo clock is the perfect addition to any home.

Staging Your Home to Sell for More Money and in Less Time Part 1: Bedrooms

Gepost door admin op 12/04/2008
Toegevoegd onder: The Zen Of Home Improvement

When selling your home there are simple steps you can take that will increase your home’s appeal to buyers. This is what we call “staging” or “redesigning” your home.

Here I will show you what you can do to your bedrooms to make them more attractive to potential buyers.

Make bedrooms look like bedrooms. If you use a bedroom for another purpose, turn it back into a bedroom. You can set an air mattress on top of boxes or milk crates. Make a pretty bed and make the bedspread or quilt hand low enough to cover the view of the boxes or crates. Buyers won’t look under the bed. If you have a crib you can use, this will also work.

Put away everything other than essential furniture, one or two lamps, and alarm clock. Large candles or fresh flowers are excellent.

All “back of door” hanging items must be put away. Cluttered doors can really weight a space down and give the feeling that the room is “too small”.

A new bedspread or quilt can do wonders for any bedroom. You can find excellent prices at large chain stores; even garage or estate sales and thrift stores can be good sources for pretty bedding.

Thin out toy collections. Put some in storage; keep the remaining toys in a box or bin that can be closed up neatly for showings. If you have room to keep it in a closet, do so.

Take down all posters, photos, pictures, drawings, and awards. You want the buyers to be able to see your house as a blank slate where they can imagine their own milestones and mementos on display.

This is a quick list to get you going. You can apply the principles of staging to every room in your house for maximum buyer appeal. In future articles we’ll go over more ideas for the inside of your house, plus we’ll discuss how to get more of that magical curb appeal you always hear about.

Jackie Riley is a real estate investor. She stages her homes to get top dollar and has written an e-book to teach others how to stage. Her book also has great info on starting a staging business.

Building Material Choices for Environmentally Responsible & for Those Who Want to Save a Little

Gepost door admin op 25/03/2008
Toegevoegd onder: The Zen Of Home Improvement

Whether you need building material as a contractor or if you are simply looking to do some remodeling on your own home, you may be discouraged about the rising costs and lower availability of some items. If you could save money and do something good for the environment with your building material choices would that appeal to you? One of the current trends in construction and building projects is to use “green” or salvaged building material products. These types of products will often save you money on purchase, but they may also save you money over time, with their energy saving features.

When you think of a “green” building material, what do you think of? If you think it is limited to those items which are remanufactured or produced using only recycled materials, you would be wrong. These types of products also include those building material choices which will conserve energy or use or reduce replacement costs over time. It can include everything from the choice of windows that limit the heat to light bulbs that conserve electricity. Some of these building material items may cost more on the original purchase price, but over time, they will give the consumer considerably more savings.

Another environmentally friendly building material choice is salvaged or reused products. You can find everything from specialized equipment for your factory or business to that period light fixture to put in the dining room. Think of it as a vintage building material. These items can often be offered at a considerable savings because they are used, and might otherwise just end up in a junkyard. People who might find this appealing are homeowners who have historic homes needing restoration, looking for materials that are no longer on the market, or business owners who are trying to build at a discounted cost.

You can find these types of materials in a number of different places. If you are lucky, you may be able to find them in the classified section of your local paper or online. You can also look at an online auction site for individual items such as a particular light fixture. Home improvement stores and online dealers offer many green products. There are salvage warehouses that offer products that they have collected from demolitions, etc. Most metropolitan areas have at least one of these warehouses. You can even find many websites which match salvage sellers with salvage buyers.
