One of the most expensive lessons that I’ve learned is that it doesn’t pay to try to bluff a lousy poker player. It took me far too much time and far too many losses to realize this, but some people just don’t know when to fold. Sometimes, this works out well, like when you’ve got a great hand, and your opponents don’t know enough to fold to you. Other times it’s terrible, when you’re making a stone-cold bluff and you’re opponent (who has a slightly better garbage hand than you) doesn’t know enough to fold to your bet.

It took me a long time to figure out that there are a few kinds of players that you just can’t bluff, and bad players are one of the most common. I used to think that bad players were susceptible to just about any kind of poker play, but bluffing seems to be one of those tactics that just aren’t effective. The problem with bluffing bad poker players is that they don’t know enough to fold a hand when an opponent shows strength, which is fine when you actually do have a good hand, but can be a disaster when you don’t.
