In poker online, hands like 4 9 are the kind of pap garbage most players will fold away without even a second thought. This is for good reason. Any hand you make with the 4 9 is going to not only perhaps be dominated by a larger hand that will take your money, but it also rarely make the nuts. So why do you still see people playing this kind of hand? Usually this would only be at the wilder tables, but there still are beasts out there who operate under the idea that any two cards are worth seeing the flop. “You never know what is good until you see the flop,” you might hear people say.
This is true and false. It is true in that with constant pressure and variation of betting patterns, you can win with any two cards. In that context, it doesn’t matter if it is a 4 9 or AA that you are holding: you are banking on the idea that your online poker opponent won’t make a hand.
It is false too, though, in that if you are playing with players so wild that they will run with anything, you actually do have to make hands in order to win. I’ve sat at countless casino online tables where I could try to bluff and play position all I wanted, but in the end a lot of the time I just had to have a better hand than theirs.
